Meeting of Five Southern States on Dengue

Chennai:(Page3 News Network)-Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad took a review meeting on Dengue situation in five Southern states at Chennai today. 

In his opening remarks, Shri Azad said a total of 2859 dengue cases were reported from five Southern states till September last year. There has been a four-fold increase totalling about 12,500 during the corresponding period this year. Similarly, 33 deaths due to dengue were reported in these states last year during January to September as against 77 deaths during the corresponding period this year. 
In his closing remarks, Shri Azad said source reduction is the main strategy for dengue prevention and control. It is imperative that all municipal corporations, other urban local bodies and Panchayati Raj institutions take the following steps immediately: 
1. notify and enforce provisions against mosquito-genic conditions in their respective jurisdiction. 
2. carry out a special campaign for sanitation and cleanliness by involving all stakeholders. 
3. arrange for spraying the identified sites of mosquito and breeding with larvicides. 
4. carry out fogging to kill and control adult mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya. 
5. sentinel surveillance sites may be increased depending on the local needs so that better surveillance and diagnostic facilities may be provided in more areas. 
6. to reduce case fatality and improve case management of dengue cases, training of the doctors and nurses should be organized not only in public sector but also in private sector. 
7. information about the diagnostic facilities, case management and vector control may be widely publicised through print media and other means of mass communication. 
Shri Azad said that the Government of India will provide more flexibility to State Governments for effective interventions against vector-borne diseases including dengue within the overall framework of NRHM. There will be no shortage of funds for recruitment of trained manpower on contract basis, providing equipment and kits at sentinel and diagnostic centres. The Swasth Bharat programme (Arogaya Bharatam) on regional DD channels sponsored by the Ministry of Health & FW, Government of India should be utilised by State Governments for providing information to the people about the measures being taken by the Government for dengue prevention and control, and facilities for diagnosis and case management, he added. 
Health Ministers and Principal Secretaries and other senior officials of Health Department of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry attended the review Meeting.
